Techniques

This is a practical based
workshop focussing on the assessment of neuromuscular patterning and movement
control in a musculoskeletal population. Using movement and facilitation skills
developed and refined in the field of neurological physiotherapy the course
participant will become more skilled in the assessment and treatment of the
subtleties of muscle imbalance and altered muscle patterning. Neuromuscular
energising techniques is based on muscle energy and its distribution during the natural patterns of movement
associated with posture and function, ensuring muscle efficiency and joint
alignment.
This is useful in the initial assessment of muscle dysfunction as well as a
reassessment tool to ensure correct muscle patterning is re-established. The
method taught can
be used to assess and change the recruitment, stability and proprioception of
movements of the trunk/spine, shoulder and pelvic girdle and upper and lower
limbs.
Following pain or injury if correct patterning is not re-established the
muscle memory / plasticity in the central nervous system is likely to revert
back to 'habit' and compensatory strategies will develop.
Current muscle imbalance techniques assess muscle dysfunction and impedance
to function around regional body segments whereas this approach integrates this so
complete dysfunction through the entire neuromuscular system is assessed using
functional movement patterns.
Senior therapists already have a high level palpatory skills and so this is
useful to 'fine tune' these skills enabling greater case in correlating the
subjective and objective findings and 'unlocking' complicated cases. Junior
therapists are developing handling skills and this course can give a great 'leap' in palpatory skill level and ability to formulate treatment procedures and
progression, whilst allowing the therapist to keep in control and on track.
The aim is for the therapist to be in total control of a patient'
neuromuscular system and have the ability to feel which muscles are firing in
which sequence and recognise and inhibit compensatory strategies. We are taught
to analyse movement and palpate joint and muscles separately. Learning to use
both of these concurrently in a key aim of the course so presenting a constant evaluation system. Therapists can see how subtle
variations in finger pressure and movement direction results in complete
alterations in the activity that a patient is performing.
Patients will literally change in your hands and joints and muscles can
release without wearing the therapist own hands! These are not strenuous
techniques - the facilitator enables the patient to become active and thereby
lessens the physical demands on the therapist. The approach links closely with other facilitatory modalities such as
'Normal Movement' and 'Proprioceptive Neuromuscular
Facilitation' (PNF), and can be used as an adjunct to other concepts and
therapies such as muscle imbalance, Pilates, Alexander Technique and Shiatsu.
Who is this course aimed at?
The course is aimed at all post graduate level Chartered Physiotherapists,
Osteopaths, Chiropractors, Sports Therapists and Sports Rehabilitators (see
additional notes above).

Previous Participant Reviews
The course is yet to run but these are snippets from patient
testimonials about Charlie.
'I am very pleased with the sessions that Dan has, and I would
highly recommend Charlie to anyone needing his assistance. It was the best
decision we have ever made for Dan's progress.' JR
'Charlie
brought a package of skill, philosophy, technique and expectation which was a
big boost to my morale and my potential recovery. In the first session he got
more movement out of me using two fingers than any number of physios had
previously managed.
Charlie has
many personal qualities which are doubtless shared by many Physiotherapists but
his dedication to perfection in rehabilitation is matched by a personal
philosophy and commitment which when combined with his skills and the specific
techniques of his Neuromuscular Energising Therapy (NET) has certainly broadened
my horizons and helped my spirit start to believe again that I might truly one
day regain my pre-stroke wholeness. I only wish I'd started to experience this
all 12 months sooner than I actually did.' ML
