* The proposed date in the South East in June has
had to be postponed as the lecturer is now committed to another course. There
will be 2009 dates in the South East in 2009*
In addition the 2008 dates in Scotland have
been altered by 2 days so we can host the course in Scotland. These were
previously advertised as Thurs 30th and Fri 31st October 2008.
During pregnancy, labour and delivery many changes
occur in a woman's body - some slowly and some acutely due to trauma during
labour and delivery. Stretching of the abdominal wall affects stability of the
back and pelvis and increased uterine weight affects bladder and uterus fascial
support systems. Altered movement strategies adopted during pregnancy may lead
to back and pelvic girdle pain, rectus diastasis, incontinence and prolapse,
common in the post partum years.
Recent research has greatly increased our understanding of the factors that
contribute to the development of these problems. Based on the research this
preventative postpartum program has been developed to empower women with an
educational home exercise program. The material taught in this programme is
applicable for women of all ages and includes correct breathing, body
alignment, bladder health, core stabilisation and how to use these in everyday
function (including return to pre pregnancy sport and recreational activities).
This 2 day evidence based course presents this information, and is
complimented by the existing educational materials prepared by LJ Lee and Diane
Lee which include a CD with a Power point presentation, patient handouts in
Word format and a patient reference video in CD or VHS format which will be
available to purchase. An update of these is expected to be available at the
time of the course.
The following learning objectives will be covered:
- Identify common non optimal postures and muscle substitution strategies
postpartum that lead to later problems such as pain, incontinence and prolapse
- Teach and practice all the exercises in the Post Partum Health for Mums
course with a focus on cueing, alignment and exercise technique
- Learn how to recognise optimal vs non optimal strategies and correct these
with exercise and manual facilitation
- Learn simple cues to correct postural alignment that can impact ribcage
mobility, abdominal wall profile, breathing pattern and core muscle recruitment
- Practice techniques to teach and facilitate neutral spine alignment in
several positions
- Practice and refine techniques for the isolation and symmetrical
recruitment of the local muscle system. This approach uses imagery extensively
to facilitate effective coordination of the lumbopelvic core.
- Discuss the factors that potentially contribute to stress urinary
incontinence and the treatment approaches for incontinence.
- Discuss the types of incontinence and the questions you need to ask in
order to direct your patient towards appropriate treatment.
- Present treatment guidelines for rectus diastasis, discuss when exercise
training is effective and when other interventions such as surgery may be
needed to be considered.
- Discussed factors such as toilet posture
- Teach a technique to check the improper response to a cue to contract the
pelvic floor muscles without using internal palpation.
- Present the active straight leg raise test for prescribing which core
muscles to train first and when to prescribe a sacroiliac belt.
- Discuss strategies to integrate the above material and use the educational
materials to teach postpartum health as a preventative programme.
Who is this course aimed at?
This course is mainly aimed at physiotherapists with an interest in womens'
health or those who work with post partum women. In addition we have previously
had continence advisors along with the womens' health physiotherapist they work
with. It is not recommended continence nurses attend this course on their own.
