This course
provides an evidence-based approach to the assessment and management of
respiratory patients and those undergoing surgery. Assessment skills will be
linked to include interpretation of blood gases, x-rays and auscultation. These
will be integrated to allow an understanding of the medical management of the
respiratory patient and enable full co-ordination of physiotherapy with oxygen
therapy and medication.
A variety
of physiotherapy techniques for the surgical patient and those with atelectasis
or at risk of atelectasis will then be critically reviewed. The indications for
physiotherapy intervention will be identified in patients who have sputum
retention or excess secretions, and critically evaluate these techniques.
This will
all be accompanied by a current reference list and problem solving skills
facilitated through the use of case studies and practical sessions.
Who is this course aimed at ?
The course is ideal for
junior and senior II staff and those requiring a revision in respiratory care.
It is also appropriate for 3rd year students.
