Summary

'I found the course and Andrea's teaching very informative. Felt I learnt so much about the upper limb.' (See below for more participant feedback).

The Back to Basics Series of courses are designed, using case studies and clinical reasoning, to revise and refresh the musculoskeletal examination and treatment of the relevant area. These include the upper limb, lower limb and spine.

Each 2 day course is aimed specifically at new graduates, Band 5 physiotherapists and those returning to work. It would also be useful for student physiotheraists, if they are interested in attending.

The course is a mixture of short lectures, practical skills and practical problem solving sessions. The aim is to provide a reasoned framework for assessing and treating and not simply to teach skills. Participant numbers are limited to a maximum of 24.

Objectives

On completion of the course a participant will be able to:

  • Describe the functional anatomy of the glenohumeral, elbow and wrist and hand.
  • Perform a thorough subjective assessment of a subject describing upper limb signs and symptoms
  • Construct a relevant and appropriate objective assessment and demonstrate these skills on a subject/ patient
  • Formulate potential differential diagnoses through the synthesis of presenting symptoms
  • Describe the process of clinical reasoning used to support the final diagnosis
  • Select, justify and demonstrate an appropriate treatment technique for this diagnosis
  • Describe appropriate after care and home exercise advice

Content

Key content includes both theoretical and practical aspects of both the subjective and physical examination including ROM, muscle, neural and special testing. Clinical reasoning and hypothesis generation will be discussed and applied through the use of case studies.

The principles of treatment will be discussed and basic treatment programmes formulated, practised and presented in response to paper case studies. Treatment application and evaluation will be strongly underpinned throughout the second day.

Course preparation

Pre course reading is recommended, this information will be made available in your PhysioUK account on successful application. It is vital that this is completed as fully as possible before the course.  The aim of this is to revise relevant anatomy and terminology that will be referred to on the course.

Restrictions

The course is not recommended for experienced staff.

All eligible participants, as listed in the audience section, must have appropriate UK professional liability insurance to cover them for the techniques to be taught, as detailed in the summary / content section. To ensure eligibility to attend, we reserve the right to ask for proof of this.

For any participant that is or maybe pregnant when attending any of our courses with a practical component we advise they email us to let us know.

Audience

The course is aimed specifically at new graduates, Band 5 physiotherapists and those returning to work. It would also be useful for student physiotherapists, sports rehabilitators and sports therapists. Graduate sports rehabilitators and sports therapists may wish to attend for a revision or if returning to work.

Participant feedback

  • 'I think it was an excellent course. I particularly liked the atmosphere within the group which was very open and unintimidating. This I think is the key to a successful course, giving people the opportunity to ask 'daft' questions. I also think the pre reading was very important and would massively help those attending in the future. Thank you.'
  • 'Perfect for people starting out in out patients and those with low confidence in musculoskeletal physiotherapy and a great basis for further reading and to learn further from.'
  • Really reinforces and brings togther the learning of the upper limb that we had at university. Was delivered in a way that seemed extremely logical.
  • These are an excellent series of courses for anyone wanting to brush up on their MSK skills. Andrea always has lots of up-to-date information r.e. the latest research on pathologies and treatment techniques and really helps you to develop your clinical reasoning skills. The courses offer a very supportive environment in which to learn, practice and ask those questions many of us may not feel comfortable to put to our seniors.
  • Go through your subjective and objective components first and some treatment techniques so that when you come to course its not all new and it will sink in and you will get loads more out of the course.
