Summary

Feedback from previous participants includes:
'I can find many words to describe this course, inspiring, enjoyable, diverting, educational, useful. Thank you very much!' (See below for more feedback).

Myofascial release techniques are rapidly gaining an upsurge in popularity because they are, for the most part, conservative, gentle and can quickly yield startling results even when applied by the beginner.

This is a two day seminar with the aim of providing a broad base introduction to the myofascial approaches to treatment which are widely used in the Americas and parts of Europe today. There is an emphasis on practical "hands-on" work interspersed with short lectures. Participant numbers are limited to a maximum of 20.

The principal aim of the course is to develop the participant's subtle sense of touch and specifically how subjective "feel" of the connective tissues can change with time and application of gentle pressure. This palpatory skill will then be set in the context of the clinical setting. The participant will learn about current thinking regarding soft tissue diagnostics as well as how and when to apply the various techniques.

Objectives

On completion of this course participants will be able to:

1. Discuss the general anatomy, physiology, mechanical pathology and biomechanics of the fascial subsystem.

2. Cause myofascial tissue to change consistency from a semi-solid state to semi-fluid state with the correct application of their hands.

3. Palpate subtle movements and restrictions within the myofascia once it is in the semifluid state, and follow these movements and restrictions, to cause the release and measurable lengthening of the tissues.

4. Make clear clinical decisions on when to apply myofascial release techniques based on an understanding of the precautions and contraindications to the taught techniques.

5. Will be able to apply the taught techniques to the appropriate clinical scenario.

Content

The course begins by discussing the anatomy and physiology of the fascia, and how this leads to its unique behaviour on palpation. The participant will then do a number of skill development exercises that will lead into sophisticated techniques aimed at treating the upper and lower limbs, the head, neck, pectoral girdle and low back.

Course preparation

There is currently no suggested pre course reading for this course.

Restrictions

We are unable to take any applicant who does not already have appropriate qualifications and professional liability insurance to perform soft tissue massage / release techniques. Non medical staff will need to provide evidence of qualifications / professional liability insurance. Unfortunately we are unable to take nurses, Pilates instructors or complimentary therapists.

Techniques CANNOT be performed on anyone who is pregnant or thinks they may be pregnant. As the participant will be acting as a model this course is NOT suitable for anyone who is, or might be pregnant. This is non negotiable, we have taken legal advice on this and unfortunately all requests to attend from those who are pregnant will be politely refused.

All eligible participants, as listed in the audience section, must have appropriate UK professional liability insurance to cover them for the techniques to be taught, as detailed in the summary / content section. To ensure eligibility to attend, we reserve the right to ask for proof of this.

Audience

This course is aimed at all levels of physiotherapists, osteopaths, chiropractors, sports therapists, sports rehabilitators and massage therapists covered to use myofascial release techniques. Complimentary therapists are not eligible to attend.
