Summary

'...I've never gone on any course that has changed my method of practice so dramatically for the better.' (See below for more participant feedback).

Although estimated to be less prevalent than low back or neck pain, thoracic pain, when present, can be significant and disabling. Furthermore, the non-painful but dysfunctional thorax can greatly impact and contribute to the development of pain and dysfunction in neighbouring areas such as the cervical spine, lumbar spine, pelvis, and the shoulder girdle complex.

Discover the Thorax (Level 1) is a 3-day evidence-based course that reviews the current evidence and presents a clinical model for assessment and treatment of the thorax. This course presents a structural framework for clinical decision making which enables the therapist to decide when, where and why different treatment interventions should be applied for successful rehabilitation. Linking together a biomechanical approach, taking into consideration thoracic segmental stability, and incorporating new research on motor control and the deep muscle system in the thorax, a new integrated approach for assessing and treating the thorax has been developed.

The course is a mixture of short lectures, practical sessions and discussion. There is a strong emphasis on the practical aspects to ensure confident and effective technique. Some manual techniques are taught but manipulative techniques will only be demonstrated and not taught. Participant numbers are limited to a maximum of 30. Assistants will be present during practical sessions to maintain a good tutor / student ratio.

Objectives

On completion of this course participants will be able to:

  1. Perform a patient focussed examination to highlight possible areas for assessment.
  2. Describe possible areas of dysfunction observed on active movement tasks.
  3. Perform specific functional, active and passive tests to demonstrate form and force closure within the thorax
  4. Formulate an appropriate treatment plan.
  5. Apply and re-evaluate treatment using manual, myofascial and novel guided imagery techniques.

The overall aim is to provide participants with a vastly increased remit within the area of the thorax thus allowing them to both assess and treat this area with superior confidence.

Content

Based on specific assessment tests, the clinician will learn how to integrate joint mobilisation techniques, myofascial release techniques, stabilisation exercises as well as functional integration exercises into a complete multimodal program which is patient specific i.e. prescriptive - and thus most effective. Novel concepts developed by LJ Lee for assessment and training of segmental thoracic control, including assessment and correction of integrated ‘ring' function, will also be covered.

This 3-day course lays the foundation for understanding how to restore movement and control within the thorax and how this impacts the rest of the body. The 136 joints that make up the thorax play a key integrated role in how loads are transferred through the trunk while simultaneously ensuring mobility, stability & postural control, and optimal respiratory function.

Course preparation

Pre course reading is recommended, this information will be made available in your PhysioUK account on successful application.

Restrictions

All eligible participants, as listed in the audience section, must have appropriate UK professional liability insurance to cover them for the techniques to be taught, as detailed in the summary / content section. To ensure eligibility to attend, we reserve the right to ask for proof of this.

For any participant that is or maybe pregnant when attending any of our courses with a practical component we advise they email us to let us know.

Audience

The course is limited to physiotherapists and osteopaths only. It is ideal for those wishing to enhance their assessment and skills in this area. It is recommend more for senior / experienced professionals rather than junior staff.

Participant feedback

  • "I just wanted to say a massive thank you to both LJ and Diane, their courses are unbelievable. Having gone away feeling less than confident with my assessment skills after last weekend, this week I have had nothing but success!"
  • "Don't panic when you don't understand the pre-course reading LJ does a great ring dance to describe the biomechanics! It is very well presented and LJ is an amazing tutor, very inspiring."
