Summary

'...great lecturer...knowledgeable and easy to talk too which creates good atmosphere for discussion'

For the past few years teaching of the McConnell concept has been quiet in the UK.  During that period, there has been a hive of activity around the world and a rapid expansion in the evidence-base for the assessment and treatment of patellofemoral pain.  This has included an exhaustive double blind placebo controlled clinical trial of this patellofemoral treatment programme.

With new UK tutor Martin Rabey, an updated McConnell approach will be put forward.  Whilst largely practical in nature, it includes a thorough examination of all of the evidence for the management of patellofemoral disorders.

The concepts, developed by Australian physiotherapist Jenny McConnell, are based on an understanding of the influence of dynamic movement patterns as a causative factor for musculoskeletal symptoms, and the beneficial adjunct of taping to immediately decrease pain and help optimise treatment.

This workshop will teach you a complete patellofemoral program with proven effectiveness. In the workshop you will learn assessment skills and treatment strategies to address patellofemoral pain, patellar tendinopathy, fat pad irritation, iliotibial friction syndrome, recurrent subluxation and osteoarthritis of the tibiofemoral and patellofemoral joints.

The course is limited to 24 participants and is a mixture of lectures, practical and patient assesssment by both the tutor and the participants. To see an example of some of the slides used during the various presentations please click here. This demonstrates the range of topics covered and some of the underpinning evidence that supports the approach.

Objectives

At the completion of this course the student will be able to:

  • Assess the static and dynamic alignment of the lower limb in relation to how it affects the knee, as well as assessing the alignment of the patella.
  • Evaluate quadriceps and gluteal control.
  • Tape to influence patellar alignment and decrease symptoms of patellofemoral pain, fat pad irritation, patellar tendinopathy, osteoarthritis, iliotibial friction syndrome and patella subluxation.
  • Design a home exercise program.
  • Use surface EMG for neuro-muscular re-education.

Restrictions

All eligible participants, as listed in the audience section, must have appropriate UK professional liability insurance to cover them for the techniques to be taught, as detailed in the summary / content section. To ensure eligibility to attend, we reserve the right to ask for proof of this.

For any participant that is or maybe pregnant when attending any of our courses with a practical component we advise they email us to let us know.

Audience

Please note any restrictions above. The course is ideally suited to any physiotherapist, osteopath, chiropractor, sports therapist or sports rehabilitator who is presented with patients presenting with knee pain and escpecially patellofemoral problems.

It would hold some benefit for students of the above professions but we do recommend participants are qualified before attending although applications from students will not be refused as long as they have appropriate liability cover.
