If you have ever thought breathing might be linked to the clinical presentation of your patients then there is good evidence now to support thi. One difficulty has lain in assessing faulty breathing and knowing the correct intervention to over come it.
Respiration is fundamental to healthy physiology, psychology and musculoskeletal function. However, few practitioners know about respiratory chemistry and how it regulates our physiology and ability to perform both physically and cognitively.
Ask yourself if you would know the signs for abnormal respiratory chemistry. As you might guess this is commonly unrecognised and is a common cause of deregulated chemistry and results in CO2 deficiency or hypocapnia causing a variety of physiological changes which can make recovery very difficult. Once the chemistry and mechanics of breathing are correctly assessed and re-established, patients with musculoskeletal presentations (back pain, neck pain, repetitive strain etc.) that have been resistant to change become more responsive to manual therapy and exercise. Even patients with symptoms normally classified as central sensitization have been shown to improve.
If this is something you would like to add to your clinical portfolio, this course, only available in 2010 on this date in Sept will discuss the relevance of breathing evaluation in physiotherapy as well as the supporting evidence. Case examples and self evaluation will be used to apply the information so you can use this material with your patients.. There is an emphasis on practical "hands-on" work interspersed with short lectures / discussions. Participant numbers are limited to a maximum of 24.

Objectives
At the completion of this course, participants will:
- Have an understanding of the chemistry of respiration and its link to breathing behaviour
- Learn methods of evaluating chemistry and mechanics, techniques to restore optimal respiration including manual therapy, and practical concepts to teach their clients and colleagues
- Describe and discuss the importance of breathing mechanics in the regulation of chemistry including breathing rhythmicity (e.g., gasping, breath holding), breathing resistance (nose vs. mouth), breaths per minute, breathing depth, locus of breathing (diaphragm, chest), and collateral muscle activity (shoulders)
- Plan and implement an approriate treatment programme for those demonstrating altered breathing mechanics
Course preparation
There is currently no pre course preparation necessary for this course.
Restrictions
All eligible participants, as listed in the audience section, must have appropriate UK professional liability insurance to cover them for the techniques to be taught, as detailed in the summary / content section. To ensure eligibility to attend, we reserve the right to ask for proof of this.
Audience
