Summary
Previous participant feedback:
'Attending this course has taken my ability to clinically reason and effectively treat multifaceted problems to a completely new plane. It was fantastic and highly recommended.'
'You'll never look back and you'll wonder how you managed treating patients before!!'
This is a unique opportunity to fire up your passion for physiotherapy and vastly improve your clinical skills with globally recognised experts Linda Joy (LJ) Lee and Diane Lee.
If you participate in The Discover Physio Series you will be part of a unique postgraduate learning experience that will allow you to learn and integrate a wide range of new skills into your current practice over a 6 month period.
The course will focus your skill in assessing and treating the spine and periphery, a key difference from the majority of other courses is the regions are integrated. This will allow you to truly understand how dysfunction in one area impacts on another.
You will achieve this through manual, myofascial and exercise techniques, many you will not have heard taught anywhere else. Real time ultrasound is integrated into the course structure and throughout all material is underpinned by tight clinical reasoning. Online support and resources are also available to you for the duration of the course. The approach taught is unique and you would be part of something only taught in three locations around the world, the UK, Canada and Australia.
During the course you would be one of only 30 people who have the opportunity to take the UK series each year. You would participant in the multiple lecture / discussions and focused practical sessions. Your learning would be enhanced further as, in addition to Diane and LJ we have assistants present to help you during practical sessions. They have previously completed the series and worked with the material clinically. Lunch is a time for relaxing or practising as we provide lunch on all days. Lastly, follow up sessions after the Series finishes are arranged so you are supported in continuing to integrate the material learnt into your practice.
If you want to know more then there is an opportunity for you to come along for the last weekend of the 2010 series and meet the participants and sit in on a half day on the 8th or 10th Oct 2010 in Bookham, Surrey. To find out about this you need to send an email to info@physiouk.co.uk explaining why you'd like to come on the series and Chris will get back to you ASAP. We only have a maximum of 10 of these available so please be quick. If you would like to consider the options for payment see the restrictions section below.

Objectives
Research in the last decade has greatly increased our understanding of integrated body function for health and performance. The Integrated Systems Model is a multi-modal model developed by Diane Lee & Linda-Joy Lee (The Clinical Puzzle) that is evidence-based (patient centered and considers both content knowledge and clinical expertise) and addresses the interplay of multiple systems (articular, myofascial, neural and visceral) and how they impact pain and strategies chosen for function and performance. In this model there are no recipes; each patient is considered individually. This approach requires you to be skilled in clinical reasoning, which is a strong focus of The Series.
Extensive use of case studies will demonstrate how you can become a reflective practitioner and ultimately an expert in your field. Treatment techniques/protocols integrated in this model include:
- Manual therapy - techniques involving many different kinds of touch (i.e. direct vs listening), mobilization, manipulation (peripheral joints only) and a technique developed by Lee & Lee called Release with Awareness
- Exercise instruction both for facilitation of optimal muscle patterning (rewiring neural networks and training neuroplasticity) and progressions into functional tasks
- Patient education including how to know what information is important for individual patients (how do you explain their problem, their pain and what is most important?)
In addition, ultrasound imaging for both assessment of core muscle function and biofeedback during re-education as well as dry needling techniques (for those that use them) will be covered. Over the year, The Integrated Systems Model will be clinically applied to the thorax, shoulder girdle, lower neck, lumbar spine, pelvis and lower extremity.
Content
The first weekend you will spend with LJ Lee and you will learn the lumbopelvic hip region, the second weekend with Diane Lee will be on the thorax (part 1), this material will be extended on the third weekend, again with Diane and integrated with the lumbopelvic hip and cervical spine. On the final weekend, again with Diane you will add on the lower limb and integrate everything together giving you the holistic overview.
During The Series you will learn how to use a combination of clinical tests and deductive reasoning to figure out the clinical puzzles seen every day.
How do you know when a non-painful but poorly controlled ankle is contributing to failed load transfer of the pelvis?
When should you train transversus abdominis vs. deep multifidus?
When should you use release techniques and when should you train motor control?
When is the thorax the driver for lumbopelvic pain or for shoulder impingement?
What area should you treat in order to address the main cause of dysfunction rather than simply treating the painful structures?
Which treatment tools do you use - mobilization, manipulation, neuromyofascial release, dry needling, core training, movement and awareness training, functional exercise integration, strength and length exercises?
When do you use which tool, and why?
What exercises will be most effective in restoring function and helping your patients achieve their movement and performance goals?
The answers to these questions and more will be covered in The Series; our aim is to further develop your clinical reasoning and hands-on skills to foster clinical expertise. Join us for a learning experience that will enhance your everyday clinical practice.
Course preparation
Eight weeks before the series starts and once course fees are paid in full, a copy of 'An Integrated Approach to the Assessment and Treatment of the LumboPelvic-Hip Region' will be sent to each participant. This will need to be watched in full before the start of the first weekend. In addition we request that you revise your relevant anatomy of the lumbar spine and pelvis. If the participant already owns this DVD then we can send a copy of the Thorax instead.
Whilst not included in the course fee, it is HIGHLY recommended that participants read the Thorax book prior to the weekend which covers the Thorax Part 1.
Restrictions
Participants MUST attended all the weekends. As the course only runs once per year and each weekend adds to the next, there is little to no scope for attending other dates if you are unable to make a weekend.
NOTE FOR THOSE HAVING COMPLETED PREVIOUS COURSES: We are allowing for up to 3 slots on the series to be taken up by those wishing to attend the individual weekends. However, apart from the first weekend, all other weekends will need to have the lumbopelvic hip as a pre requisite and the advanced thorax will need a previous series or lumbopelvic hip AND thorax part 1 as a pre requisite. All single weekends will be charged at the full daily rate (£174) please calculate the cost from the number of days for the weekend you are interested in. The early bird only applies to the full series. Please email us if you are interested.
PAYMENT OPTIONS: Ideally we require full payment up front via the website. Alternatively, if you are attending the whole series, you may pay in a maximum of three instalments. A one off admin fee of £15 is due if you wish to pay in instalments, please note each transaction on a credit card will incur the standard credit card transaction fees, there is no charge for debit cards. The course fee must be paid in FULL by 15th Feb 2011 (1st November 2010 for Early Bird rate). Please note that the fee will increase slightly after 1st Jan as the rate of VAT increases to 20% so it will be cheaper for you to pay before 1st Jan 2011. Please contact us if you wish to pay in instalments.
Whilst not contraindicated, the course is not ideal for those who are pregnant or might be pregnant due to the practical. For information, we have had a number of participants who were pregnant attend.
Audience
The course is open to all physiotherapists. Osteopaths are also welcome. Unfortunately we are unable to accept other professions on the course.
All eligible participants, as listed in the audience section, must have appropriate UK professional liability insurance to cover them for the techniques to be taught, as detailed in the summary / content section. To ensure eligibility to attend, we reserve the right to ask for proof of this.
For any participant that is or maybe pregnant when attending any of our courses with a practical component we advise they email us to let us know.

Participant feedback
- 'I undertook the series primarily due to a glowing recommendation from a colleague who had worked with Di and LJ in the past. I have to say that the series provided me with a clinical journey that absolutely revolutionised the way that I practice. The integrated systems model teaches the clinical expertise needed for treating disability and pain with the use of the most up to date research. We have been lucky enough to set up close links with both Di and LJ who have visited the football club and helped us with clinical reviews and in house teaching. Their expertise, teaching methods and passion are an inspiration to me. Any therapist with the opportunity to complete the series and have the pleasure of seeing Di and LJ at work will enjoy a journey that will greatly enhance their clinical expertise.'
- Even though it's a long course...you'll never look back and you'll wonder how you managed treating patients before!!
- Attending this course has taken my ability to clinically reason and effectively treat multifaceted problems to a completely new plane. It was fantastic and highly recommended.
