Summary

'Best course I have been on - Karen is an excellent tutor, and it was very refreshing to leave a course with new techniques I can use straight away...'

This 3 day series aims to take participants on a clinical journey over a number of months to improve their handling and manual therapy skills. Each day is separated by at least a month to allow for practise and consolidation and to maximise learning.

The tutor is a highly experienced osteopath who has been teaching physiotherapists for over 10 years. Karen covers mobilisations before teaching Grade V manipulations and effective soft tissue techniques for the cervical, thoracic and lumbar regions. These skills are then transferred to treat the peripheral joints. There will be plenty of time for practice and with a small group giving a good ratio of tutor / student interaction.

The course contains one short lecture on Day 1 and the rest of the course is practical in nature. Participant numbers are limited to a maximum of 16. Participants cannot book on individual days, they need to attend all three days.

Objectives

On completion of this course participans will be able to:

1. Justify and demonstrate therapist and patient positioning for any manual technique taught to ensure efficiency, safety and effectiveness.
2. Perform PPIVM's on the cervical thoracic and lumbar spine using low effort gentle techniques.
3. Perform effective mobilisation and manipulative techniques for the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine in both lying and sitting.
4. Demonstrate soft tissue techniques for the lumbar spine and scapulothoracic region.
5. Demonstrate joint mobilisation techniques for the glenohumeral and scapulothoracic region.
6. Demonstrate peripheral mobilisation and manipulative techniques for the elbow and foot and ankle.

Content

Day 1 concentrates on mobilisations and manipulation of lumbar, thoracic, and cervical spine. Included are an SIJ technique, passive mobility testing of the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine and some spinal soft tissue techniques.

Day 2 concentrates on the cervical spine, cervico-thoracic junction, upper thoracic spine and shoulders and includes a review of mobilisations and manipulation of lumbar, thoracic, and cervical spine covered on Day 1. Day 2 consolidates and refines the spinal work covered in day 1 as well as starting on some peripheral joint work.

Day 3 focuses on deep soft tissue / fascial release techniques for the shoulder girdle, neck and lower extremity. We cover further cervical, lumbar and foot mobilisation techniques and manipulation of the cervico-thoracic area and radial head. The manipulation techniques already covered will be reviewed and further refined. There will also be a brief introduction to cranio-sacral palpation to allow participants to assess their interest in this way of working. The day further increases the practitioners range of soft tissue / fascial release techniques and effectiveness, and refines the manipulation skills already worked on.

A key feature of the tutor's approach is to maximise positioning and efficiency of technique application for each individual, thus making the numerous techniques taught both comfortable to apply and highly effective.
