Ron Alexander (FFTP RMT )

Ron Alexander founded the FFT® method in 1994 during his eight years as the Principal Soft Tissue Therapist for the Australian Ballet. The high performance levels and the flexibility required by the dancers provided the impetus for Ron to experiment with taping techniques leading to the discovery and development of a more functional way of applying tape to modify pain and increase range of movement allowing for rehabilitation.

During this period Ron found that conventional taping in the subacute stage of injury did not always meet the needs of the dancers or adequately address the volume of injuries. This lead to an innovative way to modify and treat pain. Ron's findings were further encouraged by Dr Karim Khan, Susan Mayes and Jan Smith. The Australian Ballet held Ron in such high regard he was awarded the ‘Lady Southey Scholarship for Excellence' from the foundation. Ron has since greatly expanded the FFT method to include patients of the general population suffering from musculoskeletal injuries.

Haydn Gambling

Haydn graduated from the University of South Australia school of physiotherapy in 1989 and was introducted to osteopathic concepts by Loren Rex D.O of the Ursa Foundation. Haydn pursued this approach by taking more Ursa classes while working in America before heading home to Australia. The more intensive 'Silver series' was a major career turning point, moving beyond the mechanical model and integrating myofascial, visceral, endocrine and cranial techniques.
Co-founding the Manual Therapy Institute with Mark Elford in 2000 has allowed much further self directed study through teaching. With David Wadsworth joining the faculty in 2007, the completion of the 'pattern of dysfunction series' appears has helped to pass on a legacy of knowledge and support other teaching organisations such as Barral Institute and Jones Institute to run successful courses in Australia. Haydn currently teaches this series in Australia and the UK and practices in Adelaide city's west end.

Professor Paul Hodges (BPhty(Hons) MedDr(Neurosci) PhD, NHMRC Senior Research Fellow)

Professor Paul Hodges' work aims to understand the physiology of spinal pain, to develop novel strategies for the prevention and treatment of spinal pain, and to understand the mechanisms for efficacy of interventions for spinal pain.

Paul has doctorates in both physiotherapy and neuroscience and his work blends neurophysiological and biomechanical methods to understand the control of movement and stability of the spine and how this changes when people have pain.

Over the past 14 years, Paul and his team have continued to make discoveries that have shaped conservative management of spinal pain. Major developments include identification of strategies used by the brain to control the spine. Notably, these strategies were changed in people with spinal pain, providing the basis for novel exercise interventions. Randomised controlled clinical trials of interventions based on these findings have repeatedly shown the intervention to be effective in a range of people with pain. Work identifying the contribution of the deep muscles of the trunk, such as transversus abdominis, to spinal control have been particularly influential internationally.

Another major breakthrough was the discovery that the requirement for trunk muscles to contribute to the control of the spine as well as breathing and continence presents potential risk to the spine. This work has a major impact on the treatment of incontinence, back pain and breathing disorders. Recent discoveries include novel work that is changing our understanding of how pain affects the way we move. Studies of the neural mechanisms to control the trunk and limb muscles as leading to a new interpretation, with implications for training.

In collaboration with several research groups, Paul's clinical trials are providing a clear understanding of which interventions work for spinal pain. Perhaps more importantly, these trials are also helping us understand why the interventions work. This helps choosing the right intervention for the right person, and making interventions more effective.

Paul has received numerous National and International awards for his research. He has published more that 130 peer reviewed papers and book chapters and has received more than $AU10 million in research grants from the NHMRC, ARC and International research funds.

Charlie King (MCSP, HPC Registered)

Charlie King is a Chartered Physiotherapist who qualified from University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff in August 1985. Formally trained to Advanced level in the Bobath Concept, he developed his current approach focussing on encouraging natural movement in 1994 following a successful voluntary secondment to Krapinske Toplice Rehab Centre near Zagreb in 1993.

Charlie's approach is a structured and logical treatment approach examining the complexities of movement patterning and muscle activity, creating a logical sequential method of treatment. Initially concentrating upon neurological conditions and teaching both nationally and internationally, Charlie has developed the use of natural functional movement to include neuromuscular problems associated with musculoskeletal conditions. His approach truly breaks down the "barrier" between neuro and orthopaedic rehabilitation and treatment. He is currently based in Rotherham, South Yorkshire at his private clinic which he established in 1995

Martin Rabey (FACP, MCSP, M.Manip.Th., BSc.(Hons), Specialist Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist)

Martin now tutors two distinctly different courses.  Over the past five years Martin has developed a Cervical Manipulation course that has recently expanded to two levels to fulfil participants requests for revision, fine-tuning and further techniques including upper cervical manipulation.  These courses facilitate examination and treatment of the cervico-thoracic region using manipulative techniques in a logical, step-by-step manner, with an emphasis on patient comfort, safety and minimal force application.

Martin has recently been given the go-ahead from Jenny McConnell to be the new face of the McConnell concept in the UK.  Since it was last taught here a number of years ago a wealth of evidence has emerged.  Martin will explore all available background research and present a multi-faceted evidence-based approach to treating patellofemoral pain demonstrated to be effective in a double-blind placebo-controlled trial.  This is an updated approach to the "gold standard" of treatments.

Martin gained a distinction in the Master of Manipulative Therapy degree at Curtin University of Technology in Perth, Western Australia back in 2000, and in 2009 passed the Australian College of Physiotherapists Fellowship by Specialisation exams.  He works clinically with a mixed musculoskeletal caseload in Guernsey in the Channel Islands.
